The Ceramic Coating Process
Six steps. Zero shortcuts. Here is exactly what happens during every ceramic coating appointment — from the first paint inspection to the final LED check. Nothing is improvised, nothing is skipped.
Paint Inspection & Thickness Measurement
Before a single product is opened, we inspect every panel under LED inspection light and measure paint film thickness (PFT) with a digital gauge. This tells us: how much clear coat remains, which panels have prior body work, and what defect types are present.
Chemical & Mechanical Decontamination
Chemical phase: pH-neutral foam pre-wash, then iron remover applied to every panel. The colour change to purple confirms active dissolution of ferrous brake dust embedded in the clear coat. Tar remover addresses bituminous road deposits on lower panels.
Mechanical phase: Fine-grade clay bar removes bonded contaminants chemistry can't dissolve. The "cellophane test" confirms surface smoothness before we proceed. Any residual silicone from previous wax products is stripped completely.
Machine Polishing — Swirl Marks, Oxidation & Water Spots
Using a Rupes LHR21 Mark III dual-action polisher, we work each panel in 40×40cm sections. Compound selection depends on defect severity — 3D One for moderate swirl marks, or a dual-stage M105 + finishing polish for heavier oxidation and buffer trails.
Each section is inspected under LED after polishing. Target: 70–90% defect removal without compromising remaining clear coat. We don't over-correct. A panel at 85% correction with 4.5 mils of clear coat remaining is worth more long-term than a mirror finish at 2.8 mils.
IPA Wipedown — Removing Polish Oils Before Coating
Machine polishing leaves microscopic oils from compound and polish residue — invisible to the eye but chemically incompatible with ceramic adhesion. Every panel is wiped down with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at 70% dilution, panel by panel, with clean microfiber.
SiO2 Ceramic Coating — Layer by Layer
Coating is applied panel by panel using a suede applicator block in tight cross-hatch patterns. Flash time — the window between application and buffing — is product and temperature specific. In South Florida's humidity, we monitor ambient conditions throughout: optimal range is 15–25°C at 40–70% relative humidity.
For Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra: the base layer (CSU) is applied and cured 1 hour minimum before the EXO v5 top coat. This dual-layer system creates a hard inner shell and softer sacrificial outer layer — maximum durability with real-world flexibility.
Final LED Inspection, Documentation & Care Instructions
The vehicle is inspected under LED light at multiple angles to confirm coating coverage, uniformity, and absence of high spots or streaks. A post-service condition report is documented alongside the pre-service baseline.
You receive care instructions: no water exposure for 12 hours, no automated car washes for 30 days, pH-neutral maintenance wash only. For Gtechniq CSU packages, we submit to Gtechniq's warranty portal and provide a warranty certificate linked to your vehicle's VIN.

How SiO2 Bonds to Your Clear Coat
Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is the same compound as glass and quartz. When applied as a liquid polymer to automotive clear coat, it undergoes a condensation reaction — chemically bonding to the OH groups in the clear coat surface.
The result is a covalent bond, not a mechanical one. It can't be washed off. It can't be blown off at highway speeds. It doesn't wash away in Florida's tropical downpours. It has to be polished or abraded off — just like the clear coat itself.
Why Water Rolls Off at 110°
Water contact angle measures how water sits on a surface. At 0°, water spreads completely flat (like on uncleaned glass). At 110°+, water forms perfect spheres and rolls off at the slightest tilt — taking dust, pollen, and road grime with it.

Ceramic coating significantly increases scratch resistance — but it is not scratch-proof. At 9H hardness (vs. 2H–4H for clear coat), it resists light scratches from keys, branches, fingernails, and fine road debris that would otherwise scratch unprotected paint.
What ceramic coating cannot prevent: deep scratches from rocks, keys with significant force, or parking lot impacts. For maximum scratch and impact protection, Paint Protection Film (PPF) is the appropriate product — we install XPEL PPF as well.
