Ceramic Coating
Isn't Wax.
It's Chemistry.
A professional SiO2-based ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that chemically bonds to your vehicle's clear coat at the molecular level. Unlike wax or paint sealant — which sit on top of the surface and degrade in weeks — ceramic coating becomes part of the paint's structure. It doesn't wash off. It doesn't melt in Florida's heat.
The core component is silicon dioxide (SiO2), the same compound used in industrial glass coatings. When applied correctly to a decontaminated and corrected surface, it cures into a semi-permanent, hydrophobic matrix with a 9H pencil hardness rating — harder than your vehicle's clear coat itself.
In South Florida, where UV index reaches 11+ for six months of the year and salt air from the Atlantic accelerates oxidation, a quality ceramic coating isn't a luxury — it's the only paint protection that actually holds up. Standard wax dissolves in 4–6 weeks under Miami sun. A professionally applied Symplex Pro Shield protects for 5 years, Gtechniq for 3 years, Gyeon for 2 years — each with a 12-hour cure window before rain exposure.

Step by Step:
The Ceramic Coating Process
No two vehicles are identical. Paint thickness, oxidation level, previous products, and clear coat condition all affect the protocol. Here is exactly what happens at every appointment — nothing improvised, nothing skipped.
Total time on-site: 10 hours. We schedule a full day window so there is zero rushing at any stage.
On-Site Paint Inspection & Thickness Measurement
Before a single product is opened, we inspect every panel under LED inspection light and measure paint film thickness (PFT) with a digital gauge. This gives us the baseline: how much clear coat is available for correction, which panels have prior body work or respray, and what defect types are present.
Why it matters: A panel with a thin clear coat from a previous polishing session cannot be corrected the same way as a factory-fresh panel. Skipping this step is how amateurs burn through clear coats.
Chemical & Mechanical Decontamination
Chemical phase: pH-neutral foam pre-wash lifts surface grime without contact. Iron remover (pH-sensitive fallout remover) is applied to every panel — the colour change to purple confirms active dissolution of ferrous brake dust and industrial fallout embedded in the clear coat. Tar remover addresses bituminous road deposits on lower panels.
Mechanical phase: Fine-grade clay bar with clay lubricant removes bonded contaminants the chemistry couldn't dissolve. The "cellophane test" confirms surface smoothness before proceeding. Any residual silicone or wax from previous products is stripped.
Machine Polishing — Swirl Marks, Oxidation & Water Spots
Using a Rupes LHR21 Mark III dual-action polisher, we work each panel in 40×40cm sections. Compound selection is based on defect severity: 3D One for single-stage correction on paint with moderate swirl marks, or M105 + finishing polish for heavier oxidation and buffer trails requiring a dual-stage approach.
Each section is inspected under LED after polishing. Target: 70–90% defect removal without compromising remaining clear coat. We do not over-correct. A panel finished with 85% defect removal and 4.5 mils of remaining clear coat is worth more long-term than a mirror-finish panel at 2.8 mils.
IPA Wipedown — Removing Polish Oils Before Coating
Machine polishing leaves microscopic oils from the compound and polish residue embedded in the surface — invisible to the eye but chemically incompatible with ceramic coating adhesion. Every panel is wiped down with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at 70% dilution, panel by panel, with clean microfiber.
This step is where most failed coatings originate. Shops that skip or rush the IPA stage produce coatings that delaminate, streak, or lose adhesion in under 12 months. It is unglamorous. We do it on every panel, every time.
SiO2 Ceramic Coating — Layer by Layer
Coating is applied panel by panel using a suede applicator block in tight cross-hatch patterns. Flash time — the window between application and buffing — is product and temperature specific. In South Florida's humidity, we monitor ambient conditions throughout: optimal application range is 15–25°C at 40–70% relative humidity. Flash time is extended in high humidity.
For Gtechniq Crystal Serum Ultra: the base layer (CSU) is applied first and cured 1 hour minimum before the EXO v5 top coat. This dual-layer system creates a hard inner shell (CSU) and a softer sacrificial outer layer (EXO) for maximum durability and self-healing properties.
Final Inspection, Documentation & Care Instructions
The vehicle is inspected under LED light at multiple angles to confirm coating coverage, uniformity, and absence of high spots or streaks. A post-service condition report is documented alongside the pre-service baseline. You receive care instructions: no water exposure for 12 hours, no automated car washes for 30 days, pH-neutral maintenance wash only.
For Gtechniq CSU packages, we submit the installation to Gtechniq's warranty portal and provide you with a warranty certificate linked to your vehicle's VIN.
Why Choose DShine for Ceramic
Coating in Miami & Broward
There are dozens of detailers in South Florida offering "ceramic coating." Here is the specific difference between a certified installation and a $300 job from Craigslist.
IDA-Certified — Not Self-Declared
IDA (International Detailing Association) certification requires passing technical examinations on paint chemistry, correction techniques, and product application. Most "professional detailers" in Miami are not certified. We are. This matters when the vehicle is a Porsche 911 or a Rolls-Royce Ghost.
We Correct Before We Coat — Always
We refuse to apply ceramic coating over uncorrected paint. If you request coating-only without correction, we will explain why that produces an inferior result — and if you insist, we will decline the job. Our reputation is on every vehicle we touch. Coating over swirl marks is not DShine's standard.
Mobile Means No Transport Risk
Every mile your vehicle travels to a shop is a mile of potential road chip, salt exposure, or valet damage before the coating even goes on. We come to your garage, driveway, or condo parking — the vehicle never leaves protected space until the coating is cured and the job is complete.
Florida's UV Is Not Forgiving
Miami and Broward sit under a UV index of 9–11 for 8 months of the year. Standard wax degrades completely in 4–6 weeks at these levels. Spray sealants last 3–4 months maximum. A properly applied SiO2 ceramic coating with UV inhibitors is the only product engineered to hold up — not just survive — in South Florida's climate.
Salt Air — The Coral Gables & Miami Beach Problem
Vehicles parked within 15 miles of the Atlantic coast are exposed to airborne chloride ions that accelerate clear coat oxidation by a factor of 3–5× compared to inland locations. Symplex Pro Shield and Gtechniq Crystal Serum both carry verified salt and UV resistance ratings for South Florida coastal environments. Not every ceramic product does.
Documented — Photographed — Warranted
Every service begins and ends with a formal condition report. Before photos. After photos. Thickness measurements. For Gtechniq CSU installations, a warranty certificate is issued (2, 3, or 5 years depending on product tier) in your name, linked to your VIN, and registered in Gtechniq's global warranty portal. Not verbal. Not a business card. Documented.
The Science Behind
SiO2 Ceramic Chemistry
How SiO2 Bonds to Clear Coat
Silicon dioxide nanoparticles in a carrier solvent penetrate the microscopic pores of the clear coat surface. As the solvent evaporates, the SiO2 particles undergo a condensation reaction with hydroxyl groups on the clear coat polymer — forming permanent Si-O-Si covalent bonds. This is not adhesion. It is chemical integration. The result is a cross-linked silica network fused to the paint surface.
Why Water Beads — and Why It Matters
The cured SiO2 matrix creates a surface with a water contact angle above 110° — the threshold for super-hydrophobic behavior. At this angle, water droplets cannot spread or sheet; they bead into spheres and roll off, carrying contaminants with them. This self-cleaning effect means road salt, bird droppings, and tree sap have significantly reduced dwell time on the surface — the primary cause of paint etching and staining in Florida's environment.
9H Rating — What It Means in Practice
9H refers to pencil hardness scale — a standardized test where a 9H pencil (the hardest grade) cannot scratch the surface. Most factory clear coats rate at 3H–5H. A 9H ceramic coating creates a sacrificial layer harder than the paint beneath it. Minor abrasions, light swirl-inducing contact, and road debris that would scratch clear coat first encounter the ceramic matrix. It is not scratch-proof. It is scratch-resistant in ways that wax and sealant are not.
What Determines Longevity in Florida
Three variables govern how long a coating lasts in South Florida: 1) Surface preparation quality — coating over contamination or uncorrected paint reduces bond strength. 2) Product tier — consumer-grade SiO2 spray coatings contain 5–15% active compound versus 85–95% in professional coatings like Gtechniq CSU. 3) Maintenance — pH-neutral washing preserves the silica network; alkaline detergents and automated car washes chemically degrade it.
Ceramic Coating
FAQ
Professionally applied SiO2 ceramic coating in South Florida lasts 5 years with proper maintenance. Our top tier, Symplex Pro Shield, carries a 5-year warranty. Gtechniq Crystal Serum offers 3 years, and Gyeon Q²One 2 years — all applied by certified installers. Consumer spray coatings sold at auto parts stores last 3–6 months under Florida's UV. The difference is active SiO2 concentration and application method.
Yes — always. Ceramic coating magnifies everything beneath it. Swirl marks visible at 15 feet before coating become locked-in defects visible at 5 feet after coating. The ceramic matrix doesn't hide imperfections — it preserves them permanently. Every DShine ceramic package includes at minimum single-stage paint correction. We do not apply coating over uncorrected paint.
Yes. DShine is a fully mobile service operating across Miami-Dade and Broward County. We are pre-approved vendors for many South Florida gated communities and high-rise buildings including Brickell, Sunny Isles, Aventura, Coral Gables estates, and Weston communities. We carry full insurance and HOA vendor documentation. For condo garages with height restrictions under 7ft, we operate with a compact low-clearance unit.
All three are professional-grade SiO2 coatings applied by certified installers — the difference is warranty tier and chemistry. Gyeon Q²One is an entry professional coating with a 2-year warranty, excellent hydrophobic properties and ideal for vehicles with minor paint correction needs. Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light is a dual-layer system — hard base coat plus EXO v5 flexible top coat — with a 3-year warranty and strong UV and salt resistance, ideal for South Florida coastal environments. Symplex Pro Shield is our flagship: a 5-year certified coating requiring a full 10-hour application protocol and 12-hour controlled cure window. Recommended for luxury, exotic, and high-value vehicles where long-term paint preservation is the priority.
Maintenance is straightforward: pH-neutral car shampoo only (no alkaline or acidic detergents), hand wash or touchless wash only (no brush automatic car washes), and an annual SiO2 topper spray to refresh hydrophobic properties between full ceramic installations. We provide a complete maintenance guide and product recommendations with every ceramic package. For VIP program members, maintenance washes are included on schedule.
In South Florida specifically — yes, unequivocally. Standard carnauba wax costs $150–250 applied and lasts 4–6 weeks under Miami's UV. Applied 8–10 times per year, that's $1,200–2,500 annually in wax cost alone — with none of the hardness protection, chemical resistance, or hydrophobia. A $1,199 ceramic coating properly applied and maintained lasts 3 years: roughly $400 per year for protection that is objectively superior in every measurable dimension.
