Our Detailing Process
Step by Step

Every DShine Details appointment follows the same documented workflow — from pre-inspection to final client walkthrough. No shortcuts, no omissions.

Every Step, Explained

1

Initial Assessment & Documentation

Before touching the vehicle, we conduct a full exterior inspection under directed lighting and photograph all existing defects: scratches, chips, swirl marks, water spots, contamination areas. Paint depth is measured at all panels and recorded. The client receives a summary of findings before any work begins.

2

Pre-Wash Decontamination

An iron decontaminator spray is applied to all painted surfaces and wheels. The color change (iron particles turn purple when they react) shows contamination load. After dwell time, panels are rinsed. This removes iron fallout that, if left on the surface during washing, would drag across paint and create new scratches.

3

Two-Bucket pH-Neutral Hand Wash

The vehicle is washed using the two-bucket method with pH-neutral automotive shampoo and a clean foam mitt. One bucket is for soapy water; one is for rinsing the mitt before reloading with soap. This prevents contamination from one panel being dragged to the next. No sponges, no single-bucket shortcuts.

4

Clay Bar Decontamination

After washing, paint is decontaminated with a clay bar and lubricant. Clay removes bonded contamination that washing and iron decontaminator cannot — industrial fallout, paint overspray, mineral deposits. The clay is discarded if dropped; contaminated clay is never used on paint.

5

Paint Correction (When Required)

Machine polishing is performed with a dual-action polisher at controlled speeds. Compound and pad selection is matched to defect type. Each panel is inspected under multiple lighting angles after each stage. Paint depth is measured between stages. No panel is considered complete until it passes inspection.

6

Ceramic Coating Application

The paint surface is wiped with IPA (isopropyl alcohol) solution to remove all oils and residue before coating. Ceramic coating is applied in small sections with a dedicated applicator block at a controlled ambient temperature. Leveling and flash time are monitored. Application continues panel by panel until the full vehicle is coated.

7

Final Inspection & Client Walkthrough

After coating application, the vehicle is inspected under multiple light sources for any high spots, missed areas, or issues requiring correction. The client receives a walkthrough of all work performed, before/after documentation, care instructions for the first 7 days, and the maintenance schedule for their specific coating.

What We Never Skip

In the interest of transparency: some detailers skip paint depth measurement because it adds time. Some skip the two-bucket wash because one bucket is faster. Some apply ceramic coating without IPA wipe-down because they trust their eye over the chemistry. We don't skip these steps — they exist to protect your vehicle and the integrity of the work, and cutting them creates problems that appear weeks later, not during the appointment.

If a detailer cannot tell you exactly what products they are using, cannot explain their decontamination sequence, or cannot provide a paint depth reading from your vehicle — ask why before booking.

Process Questions Answered

Why do you measure paint depth before correction?

+

Paint depth gauges measure the thickness of clear coat in microns at each panel. This tells us how much correction is safely possible before reaching the base coat. Without this measurement, machine polishing risks burning through thin areas — particularly at panel edges, hood corners, and door handles where factory clear coat is thinner. We measure at every correction appointment, no exceptions.

How long does a full ceramic coating appointment take?

+

Full detail + single-stage correction + 3-year ceramic coating: 6–8 hours. Full detail + two-stage correction + ceramic coating: 8–12 hours. We schedule full correction and coating as same-day appointments when possible. The vehicle is ready for basic use (no rain or washing) after 24 hours; full cure is 7 days.

Do you work at my location or do I bring the car to you?

+

We work exclusively mobile — we come to your home, office, condo parking, or any location with appropriate space. We are fully self-contained: water tank, power generator, all equipment and products. You do not need to provide anything except parking space and access.

What happens if you find paint damage I wasn't aware of?

+

We document all paint defects during the initial inspection with photos. If we find damage that affects the scope of work, we contact you before proceeding and discuss options. We never begin correction or coating work on issues that change the scope without client confirmation. Transparency about paint condition before and after is a core part of every appointment.

How do you handle exotic or rare paint finishes?

+

Any vehicle with non-standard paint (matte, satin, Bespoke, PTS, or older single-stage finishes) receives individual product compatibility confirmation before any treatment. We do a test spot on a hidden panel before full application of any correction compound or coating product. We do not proceed if we are uncertain about compatibility — we discuss options first.
